The Thinking Mode

Our Thinking Mode is the center of our attention and the source of our control. This is where we decide on our intentions, strategies, plans, goals, and tasks. This is where we choose and discern what we want to do, and don’t want to do. The thinking mode grows and improves through acquiring knowledge.

The Automatic Mode

Our Automatic Mode determines those actions we automatically do without thought. Our automatic mode controls us; we don’t control it. It drives those involuntary and unintentional actions that pop up without us even thinking about them. It works like a “Robot Within” that has a mind of its own.

The Solution

The inability to eliminate undesirable workplace behaviors, uncomfortable actions, and enact New Year’s resolutions all have the same underlying cause – our Automatic Mode.

Most people try to change their behaviors with their Thinking Mode. They choose to quit smoking, lose weight, or change a destructive workplace behavior because they “will to” and “determine to” but they soon find out that the Automatic Mode is much stronger than their willpower and determination as the Automatic Mode overrides them and fights them to do what it’s used to doing automatically … Hence, the failure of most New Year’s resolutions and behavioral change attempts at work.

It’s the same with workplace success and performance behaviors. A leader or executive may have a problem with micromanaging and has been told over and over to change, yet no matter how much this person desires and tries to change, he or she fails because the automatic mode controls habitual behaviors and inherently resists change.

We are experts at changing the Automatic Mode through what we call behavior coaching or transformational coaching, which brings the desired, permanent change that so many people desire. Our techniques of behavioral coaching do not rely on willpower or dogged tenacity. They “rewire” the Automatic Mode that enables our clients to perform and behave according to their intentions without thinking about it.
